چکیده

We analyze and compare candidate crystal structures for the crystalline color superconducting phase that may arise in cold, dense but not asymptotically dense, three-flavor quark matter. We determine the gap parameter ∆ and free energy Ω(∆) for many possible crystal structures within a Ginzburg-Landau approximation, evaluating Ω(∆) to order ∆. In contrast to the two-flavor case, we find a positive ∆ term and hence an Ω(∆) that is bounded from below for all the structures that we analyze. This means that we are able to evaluate ∆ and Ω as a function of the splitting between Fermi surfaces for all the structures we consider. We find two structures with particularly robust values of ∆ and the condensation energy, within a factor of two of those for the CFL phase which is known to characterize QCD at asymptotically large densities. The robustness of these phases results in their being favored over wide ranges of density. However, it also implies that the Ginzburg-Landau approximation is not quantitatively reliable. We develop qualitative insights into what makes a crystal structure favorable, and use these to winnow the possibilities. The two structures that we find to be most favorable are both built from condensates with face-centered cubic symmetry: in one case, the 〈ud〉 and 〈us〉 condensates are separately face centered cubic; in the other case 〈ud〉 and 〈us〉 combined make up a face centered cube.

Effects of density-dependent quark mass on phase diagram of three-flavor quark matter

Considering the density dependence of quark mass, we investigate the phase transition between the ( unpaired ) strange quark matter and the color-flavor-locked matter, which are supposed to be two candidates for the ground state of strongly interacting matter. We find that if the current mass of strange quarkms is small, the strange quark matter remains stable unless the baryon density is very ...

Density dependence of quark masses and stability of color-flavor locked phases

Considering the density dependence of quark masses, we investigate the color-flavorlocked matter and its stability relative to the ( unpaired ) strange quark matter. We find that, when the current mass of strange quark ms is small, the strange quark matter remains stable for the moderate baryon densities. When ms is large, the gapless phase of the color-flavor-locked matter is found to be diffi...

We describe the crystalline phase of color superconducting quark matter. This phase may occur in quark matter at densities relevant for compact star physics, with possible implications for glitch phenomena in pulsars [ 1]. We use a Ginzburg-Landau approach to determine that the crystal has a face-centered-cubic (FCC) structure [ 2]. Moreover, our results indicate that the phase is robust, with ...

Single-flavor CSL phase in compact stars

We suggest a scenario where the three light quark flavors are sequentially deconfined under increasing pressure in cold asymmetric nuclear matter as, e.g., in neutron stars. The basis for our analysis is a chiral quark matter model of Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type with diquark pairing in the spin-1 single flavor (CSL), spin-0 two flavor (2SC) and three flavor (CFL) channels. We find that nucleo...

Strange Goings on in Quark Matter

The study of hadronic matter at high baryon density has recently attracted a lot of interest. At zero baryon density chiral symmetry is broken by a quark-anti-quark condensate. At high density condensation in the quarkanti-quark channel is suppressed. Instead, attractive interactions in the color anti-symmetric quark-quark channel favor the formation of diquark condensates. As a consequence, co...
